Here’s the email received today, with more details, from Tim Blumenthal from People for Bikes:

Federal funding for bicycling is under serious attack. Today or tomorrow, Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma will introduce an amendment to eliminate dedicated funding for Transportation Enhancements, which is the main source of funding for bike projects of all types. We need you to take action today by emailing your U.S. Senators to urge them to oppose and defeat Mr. Coburn’s amendment.

If Senator Coburn’s amendment succeeds, bicycling in the U.S. will become less safe and more difficult. Twenty years of consistent, cost-effective investment in beneficial bike projects will stop.

When we launched peopleforbikes.org, we promised you that we would only ask for your help when we really needed it. This is one of those times.

We need every U.S. Senator to hear from hundreds, if not thousands, of their constituents who value government support for bicycling. A strong vote against Coburn’s amendment will be a convincing statement of how much Congress and Americans value bicycling, and will influence all future votes on bike and pedestrian programs and funding.

Please email your U.S. Senators today and tell them to oppose Coburn’s amendment and preserve funding for bicycling. (You can find your Senators, review basic suggested text for your email, and send your note directly from this link.)

It’s bad enough we get attacked by rabid, vindictive deer, but now congress is trying to attack us (our cycling infrastructure) as well. If they’re gonna piss away our tax dollars make sure it’s on something important to you. Peopleforbikes.org has an easy way to tell your congressman/senator that you’re pissed and ain’t gonna take it anymore!

Vote for More Signage

Ron has gone through considerable effort to register and qualify for possible grant funding for more “Share the Road” and similar signs in our area.  To receive the award, his proposal has to be voted to the top of the list. This is your chance to help cycling safety in our area with relatively little effort.

and do whatever it takes to vote. A warning in advance – the voting can be a little bit of a pain but be persistent and make sure your vote is counted. If you DON’T vote, the proposal won’t get funded.

Windy, windy. Another lovely evening for a TnTT. Five riders showed and one, Rick, shattered his previous record by 70 seconds – must be the new bike. Congratulations Rick!

Windy. Check. Hot. Check. Humid. Check. Must be TnTT time. Five riders. One record. Hansi shaved 14 seconds off his previous best time – must be the spinning class…and the lentils. Congratulations Hansi! The rest of us were not so productive.

Early TnTTer

Well, it was marginally cooler this evening than last time (my head didn’t feel like it was going to explode) but to make up for the reduced heat, the wind was a bit stronger. But two riders, Hansi and Tom, beat their records. Hansi beat his previous time by 49 seconds, tying Anne’s record time (that’s gonna be a fight for the rest of the season) and Tom eeked out 1 second over his previous best. Congratulations to Hansi and Tom!

And welcome to a visitor (and former local resident), Glenn – he did a great job especially considering no aero bars.
