WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: 2012 Model Year Giant Defy Advanced and Avail Advanced Bicycles

Units: About 900

Importer: Giant Bicycle, Inc., of Newbury Park, Calif.

Hazard: The fork can crack, posing a fall hazard to riders.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported

Description: This recall involves all 2012 model year men’s Giant Defy Advanced 0, 1 and 2 model bicycles and the women’s Giant Avail Advanced 0, 1, and 2 model bicycles. “Giant” and the model name are printed on the bicycle. The bicycles are various colors and sizes.

Sold by: Authorized Giant Bicycle dealers nationwide from August 2011 through November 2011 for between $3,000 and $4,550.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop riding the recalled bicycles and contact any authorized Giant Bicycle dealer for a free inspection and replacement of the fork.

Importer: Trek Bicycle Corporation, of Waterloo, Wisc.

Hazard: The bolt that secures the seat saddle clamp to the seat post can break posing a fall hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Trek has received four reports of incidents with one injury involving a broken tooth and lip injury.

Description: The bicycles affected by this recall include the following models:

Model Year 2012: Trek 7.2 FX, 7.3 FX, 7.4 FX, AND 7.5 FX; District, and 9th District bicycle models: WSD, Livestrong and Disc models.
The model name is found on the bicycle’s frame.

Consumers can determine the model year by looking at the SKU number stamped on the bottom bracket, which is found near the pedals. If the last two digits of the SKU are 12, the bicycle is a Model Year 2012 bicycle.

Sold at: Specialty bicycle retailers nationwide between May 2011 and September 2011 for between $550 and $1,100.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should stop riding the bicycles immediately and contact an authorized Trek dealer for a free replacement bolt.

Name of Product: Full Speed Ahead BB30 Gossamer crank sets installed on numerous makers of bicycles

Units: About 9,300

Importer: Full Speed Ahead, of Woodinville, Wash.

Manufacturer: TH Industries, of Taiwan

Hazard: If the fixing bolt is over-tightened on the non-drive crank arm, the bolt shoulder can crack or break. If this occurs, the non-drive arm can fall off the bicycle causing the rider to crash and suffer injuries.

Incidents/Injuries: Full Speed Ahead has received 11 reports of incidents, including two cases where injuries have been reported.

Description: A crank set is the component of the bicycle that the chain and pedals attach to for pedaling. The recalled models are either painted black with “Gossamer” printed in white on the arm or white with “Gossamer” printed in black on the arm. There are two drive gears (referred to as “double”) on the crank set. The recalled crank arms were assembled as original equipment on the following bicycle models:

Name of Product: 2011 Model Year Anthem Giant Bicycles

Importer: Giant Bicycle Inc., of Newbury Park, Calif.

Manufacturer: Giant Manufacturing Co. Ltd., of Taiwan

Hazard: The frame can crack at the junction of the seat post and top tube, posing a fall hazard to riders.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves 2011 model year Giant Anthem X 29er 1, 2 and 3 model bicycles. The bicycles were sold in small, medium and large. “Giant” and the model name are printed on the bicycle.

Sold by: Authorized Giant Bicycle dealers nationwide during August 2010 for between $2,200 and $3,500.

Importer: Felt Bicycles, of Irvine, Calif.

Manufacturer: ADK Technology Limited of China

Hazard: The bicycle’s fork steer tube can break, causing the rider to lose control, fall and suffer injuries.

Incidents/Injuries: Felt Bicycles has received seven reports of the bicycle forks breaking. Minor injuries, including bumps and bruises were reported in one of the incidents.

Description: The recall includes all 2009 Felt model B12, B16 and S32 road bicycles.

* 2009 B12 – These bicycles are gloss silver/carbon and have carbon fiber frames with carbon fiber forks with aluminum steer tubes.
* 2009 B16 – These bicycles are matte black/red and have carbon fiber frames with carbon fiber forks with aluminum steer tubes.
* 2009 S32 – These bicycles are available in gloss white/red and have aluminum frames with carbon fiber forks with aluminum steer tubes.

Felt Bike Recall

More forks snapping off – probably not much fun, especially in a pace line. Felt is recalling all 2009 models B12, B16 and S32.  More info is available at the CPSC.

Madone steerer snapped

This is a pic of a Madone that Cheryl & I (Ron) watched snap off at the Pro race in Roswell, GA this April just after the
Athens, GA Pro race weekend. If you look at the bars
they are not going in the right direction… about 6 riders
went down because of this.
